Pinterest feature let users search with their smartphone camera

The social discovery app revealed Lens, which is currently in a beta testing period. Lens lets users point their camera to an object, then the app will analyze it and present related ideas.

For example, if you see a cool dining room set, open up Pinterest, point your camera toward the set, then the app will find similar dining room sets, as well as other related items such as furniture with a similar style.

“For now, Lens works best for finding home decor ideas, things to wear and food to eat,” wrote Evan Sharp, Pinterest’s co-founder and head of product. “As more and more people give it a try, and we continue making improvements to our technology, results will get even better, and the range of objects Lens recognizes will get increasingly wider.”

Lens is expected to roll out on iOS and Android in the coming weeks.

Pinterest also launched Instant Ideas related to pins users maintain. Tapping a circle in the lower right corner of a pin will reveal related items users can explore. Pinterest will add a Shop the Look feature, where users can buy the items featured in a pins, such as clothing or furniture. Both are available now on iPhone and Android.
